In fact, we don’t have a name for this other state, where you don’t yet have something that you’ll get later, but you don’t yet have it. Let’s call that, not loss, let’s call it “schmoss,” okay? So during this period, there’s a loss of life, but no schmoss of life. And in this period, there’s no loss of life, but there’s a schmoss of life. And now we need to ask, as philosophers, why do we care more about loss of life than schmoss of life? What is it about the fact that we don’t have something that we used to, that makes it worse than not having something that we’re going to?
